Race on the Agenda (ROTA) is taking part in the Government's consultation on modernising the council tax system, with the review covering how council tax is calculated and banded, how enforcement is carried out (including the use of bailiffs), and how the system is communicated.
Research shows that Black and Global Majority communities are disproportionately affected by the way the system currently operates. This consultation is a vital opportunity for organisations, residents, and local communities to challenge these inequalities and push for a fairer approach - from clearer communication, to fairer enforcement, and a more just council tax banding process.
